Attack on Titan is a highly popular manga (and adapted anime) created by Hajime Isayama. The story surrounds Eren and his adopted sister Mikasa. It is set in world where humanity lives in cities surrounded by huge walls to protect them from giant man-eating creatures called Titans. After the Titans ransack their city, Eren and Mikasa join a special military force to fight the creatures. The first season of the anime has been adapted into two live action films, scheduled to be released later this year. With the release date so close, fans of the franchise are gearing up for the premiere. Here are their thoughts about the upcoming film:

WHAT FANS ARE HAPPY ABOUT:

• Two movies. The first season has been developed into two separate films, as is popular with big franchises. Best part? Their release dates are only a few months apart.

• Shinji Higuchi is the director of both films. He has years of experience as a storyboard and special effects artist for anime. Due to his love of the genre and reputation of creating good work, most fans trust the material in his hands. Looks like we won’t have another M. Night Shyamalan/Avatar: the Last Airbender situation to deal with.

• In the trailer, you can see the Mikasa, the story’s heroine, kissing someone. As of right now, it seems like no one can say for sure who it is. Some people believe that it’s Eren, and a lot of people are pumped about it. Eremika (Eren x Mikasa) is a hugely popular pairing in the fandom, so shippers are rejoicing.

WHAT FANS AREN’T HAPPY ABOUT:

- It looks like the films are only licensed to be released in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the Americas. Fans in other countries will have to wait for an online release, and won’t be able to see the films on the big screen.

- Because all the commotion the film is causing, the season two premiere date has been pushed back to 2016.

- Where the heck are Levi and Erwin?! Levi and Erwin are two of the most popular characters (and one of the most popular ships) of the anime, and fans are upset they didn’t get a role in the live-action film. We’ve got our fingers crossed the pair will make an appearance in the second installment of the film. If not, we’ve got plenty of fan art.

• Okay, there are a lot of people in favor of the possible Eren x Mikasa kiss. But, this has also caused a lot of controversy in the fandom, largely because it isn’t canon, and romance is far from the center of the Attack on Titan universe. As the best defender against Titans in her age group, Mikasa is a certified badass. It’s hard to imagine that Mikasa’s ruthless fighting skills wouldn’t be enough to draw an audience. Many fans are wondering why it’s necessary to add romance to the mix?

Although there is a long history of live-action anime films being received poorly by fans, the Attack on Titan fandom is excited regardless. Here’s hoping its everything the fandom imagines and more.
